‘If I Was Black, I’d Be Picking Cotton…’ is How White Teen Asked Girl to Prom (She Said ‘Yes’)

Hey, we’re all about being original, but one high school jackass took it to a whole ‘nother level when he decided to offer what’s been coined a “promposal” via a huge sign that read: If I was black I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white so I’m picking U 4 prom.”

She said ‘Yes,’ but after his post when viral, he’s been getting nothing but hate. Students are even demanding that he not be allowed to go to prom.

According to the Herald-Tribune 18-year-old Noah Crawley of Riverview High School in Sarasota held up a sign that read ?If I was black I?d be picking cotton, but I?m white so I?m picking U 4 Prom??

The apple of his eye responded in short order, with two heart-eye emojis.

After the poster was shared on Snapchat and later circulated on twitter, people started calling it ‘racist.’

One post by tia yahnke wrote,

this is Noah Crowley a Riverview High School student. he seems to not know about America?s history. RACISM IS A PROBLEM. definitely should not be allowed to go to prom!!

A post from Destiny Johnson read,

Sarasota teen’s racist promposal reminds us that it’s 2018 and racism still isn’t being taken seriously. https://fcnews.tv/2KaQDd5

And Tris wrote,

The fact no one told him this was wrong during the entire process of making it, INCLUDING the girl who said yes is a big issue and this makes me sick ?

Quasim Rashid, Esq. posted, at first…

Imagine if Jews were forced to celebrate Hitler?

Today’s “Confederate Memorial Day” in the south?which celebrates the white supremacists who kidnapped, raped, & enslaved Africans for 400 years, fought against their freedom, & let the KKK to form afterwardhttp://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2018/04/confederate_memorial_day_in_al.html ?

Followed by this…

“If I was Black I’d be picking cotton but I’m white so I’m picking u 4 Prom.”

Yes, this open racism is in 2018 America.

Happy Confederate Memorial Day ??? http://www.heraldtribune.com/news/20180423/sarasota-student-makes-racist-prom-proposal ? pic.twitter.com/c4sRTHWbwN

…and the comments continue.

Of course dude was feeling the heat following all the negative comments, and posted an apology.

?It was a completely joke and it went too far,? he said. ?After reading the texts and Snapchat?s I truly see how I have offended people and I?m sorry.?

…and later, his parents followed suit; releasing the statement below to HuffPost

While our son has apologized himself, on behalf of our family, we wish to also express our most sincere apologies for the terrible words used in his ?promposal.? We love our son dearly and know that he is a far better person than reflected in this reckless behavior. That said, as loving parents, we also feel compelled to share our own deep regret and serious concern about his actions. After numerous familial conversations and lengthy discussions with Riverview High School administrators, we have jointly agreed that our son will not be attending any further school activities or functions, including the Prom or graduation ceremony. As a family, we truly recognize this incident is a very difficult but important life lesson and pledge to do all we can to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. Certainly, we hope that all of the people and communities who were hurt and offended will forgive our son and family.?

On Monday, the Sarasota County School District said that ?neither the school district nor Riverview High School condones or supports the message conveyed in the post. This incident remains an on-going investigation and any disciplinary action and recommendation will be made accordingly.? The statement continued, noting that ?the school district is working with local and national civic leaders, including the NAACP, to develop a roundtable forum to discuss the issue of race ? not just at Riverview, but district-wide.?

Parents also received a robocall from the school?s acting principal, Kathy Wilks, informing them of the situation.?Many who saw the post are understandably upset with its contents as well as the subsequent commentary to the post,? the recorded message said. ?Our guidance counselors and administrators are available for any students who wish to speak to someone regarding the issue. Riverview High School has a wonderful student population, and we know our school will use this incident as an opportunity to have productive conversations about respect for one another.?

Apparently, Crawley’s promposal wasn’t an isolated incident. One student said on Facebook that the school has a history of such incidents. Read (and see) more about that here
