Dub Poet Mutabaruka Returns with First New Recording in 14 Years | LISTEN

Dub Poet, Mutabaruka

*Mutabaruka, along with Linton Kwesi Johnson, established dub poetry as a force in reggae music in the late 1970s.

More than 40 years later, after several critically acclaimed albums, worldwide touring, a long-running popular, often controversial radio show on Irie-FM, and regular posting of provocative video commentaries on YouTube, Mutabaruka steps forward with “Black Attack,” a hard-hitting new single produced by Mad Professor.

It is the first single from Mutabaruka’s new album of the same name, which was released on October 6, 2023, by Shanachie Entertainment.

“’Black Attack’ is attacking all the things that are keeping black people from progressing after 500 years of slavery and now colonialism,” Muta explains. “I had connected with Mad Professor over ten years ago and he actually sent some riddims but we didn’t connect again until last year when I was in England.”

The Black Attack album continues Mutabaruka’s uncompromising dissection of racism, colonialism, African history and culture, Rastafari, and Black progress, as well as the hypocrisies and dysfunction of contemporary life in Babylon. After a 14-year wait for a new recording, Mutabaruka’s return promises to be worth the wait.
