*Damn, can a Black man get a break? When Karlos Cashe of Oviedo, Florida was pulled over by cops recently, he thought it was for a traffic violation, he had forgotten to turn his headlights on. But when they saw white powder on his car seat and floorboard, they immediately suspected it was crack cocaine, and tests came back to confirm their suspicions. This according to authorities, who also say a K-9 unit sniffed out more “cocaine” and marijuana in the car.
Of course it didn’t help that Cashe, who now works as a handyman, had been out on probation that stemmed from marijuana and cocaine charges in 2015.
But after spending 90 days in Seminole County Jail — without the option of bond — lab tests on the substance came back negative. It had been drywall all along.
?I know for a fact that it?s drywall because I?m a handyman,? Cashe told WFTV-TV. ?I sat there 90 days knowing I was innocent,? he said.
I repeat: Can a Black man get a break? These cops, once they realized this man had a record, already had it in their mind — prior to any tests, that what they saw was crack cocaine. How on earth does a test come back to prove a substance that is NOT a drug, IS a drug?
I can understand them arresting him at first; and even booking him “on suspicion.” The fact that he has a record of drug possession would not immediately make this wrong. But its the return of the first tests as positive that crooks my brow. How could such a mistake be made?
Cashe says he doesn’t want this to happen to anyone else, so he is requesting further investigation into this particular department.
